Equisetum is a representation of a large outdoor site-specific wall painting of the same name that Morrison created in 2017 at Kangkangee Arts Village, Busan, South Korea. The wall painting was commissioned by Site Gallery and Busan based arts organisation Plan B, forming part of the British Council’s Inner City Arts project.

The web of emphatic marks that appear abstract are derived from a botanical illustration of an Equisetum plant, also known as a Horsetail. Spacial recession is implied by the scale shift to the tree and the edge of the frame although the image remains resolutely flat, without single point perspective. The oscillation between the extreme close up and the distant tree functions like the cinematic technique known as dolly zoom, an in-camera effect that appears to undermine normal visual perception. The viewer is able to complete the mise en scène in their mind’s eye according to individual memory, preference and associative colour.

Artist Biography

Paul Morrison is a contemporary British artist internationally renowned for his appropriated monochromatic site-specific wall paintings, paintings, sculptures, films and prints who lives and works in Sheffield and recently opened Attercliffe™️, a new artist directed space in the east end of the city. He studied at Sheffield City Polytechnic and Goldsmiths College, London. He has exhibited widely in museums and galleries around the world for over 20 years. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt among many other international institutions.
